Yoga for Surfers and SUP yoga
Being a passionate surfer and skater (though not necessarily good at either!) I am very aware of the importance of flexibility, core strength, mental strength and breath control, to maximise our performance. I teach yoga on solid ground, stand up paddleboards and am one of the few in the UK to teach it on balance boards, in the yoga studio.
In fact I am in the process of writing a book on the subject of yoga and surfing and have had articles published on a range of surf sites and magazines. I am also the only qualified SUP yoga teacher in North Devon and am working with local surf and SUP instructor Nick Thorn to develop an all round SUP and SUP yoga experience.
Although most 'surf yoga' classes and articles in magazines seem to concentrate on poses that they decide are invaluable to surfers, in reality all yoga is good for surfers and most sports. The core strength work and flexibilty benefits decrease the chance of injury and i know that without my yoga practise i would have probably been hurt surfing and skating far worse than i have.
The thing that most surf yoga classes seem to miss is that yoga can offer just as valuable lessons in mental strength, body awareness and breath control.
When we are under stress, particularly in more testing conditions, fear or panic can take a grip, our breath becomes unsteady and our performance is affected.
In my surf yoga classes, not only do we practise poses to improve core strength and flexibility but we also learn techniques to steady the mind so heightening our performance as well as practising breath control and breath holding techniques that will be familiar to freedivers and more experienced yoga practitioners. Saturday mornings in a beautiful bright studio overlooking the Atlantic, what could be better?!
